People often ask where the name “Kids of Purple” comes from.

The short answer is simple – it comes from purple being the nationally recognised colour of domestic and family violence and, subsequently, it is about recognising that many Australian children come from homes where they experience domestic and family violence every single day.

But it is also more than that.

The colour purple is recognised across the world as being the symbol of peace, courage, survival, honour and dedication to ending violence.

So… “Kids of Purple” is about recognising that children – kids – ARE the greatest symbols of peace, of courage, of survival, of honour and of a dedication to ending violence.

Children represent peace because they embody hope, healing, and the possibility of a future free from violence.

Children represent courage because every day, whilst still learning how to tie their shoelaces and how the world around them works, they endure and overcome hardships that they have no control over.

Children represent survival because in a world where their biggest priority should be schoolwork or after-school sports, for many, their biggest priority is safety.

Children represent honour because they continue to show up for others – siblings, parents and friends – even when they might not yet know how to properly look after themselves.

Children represent a dedication to ending violence because when they speak up about what is wrong, when they support healthy relationships and stand against unhealthy ones, when they choose to accept love first, they are bringing hope to our nation.

We, the Kids of Purple, believe that children and young people are part of the solution.

Together, we can help build a safer Australia and reduce the impact of domestic and family violence for future generations.

Real change starts with young people.

And that… is why we exist 💜
